For some reason, I've been hearing that it was apparently the size of a horse and weighed 400kg (most scimitar cats rarely reached 200kg)!

It doesn't seem to be true. Homotherium's were not the biggest genus of real sabertooth cats, and even populators rarely could be more than 350.

Its surprising how well the textures blend together in this piece; the cat's camouflage actually does well here, but sadly we haven't any of these lovely beasts to determine if its accurate. Oh well - a good piece all the same.

Question - was that background manipulated or intentionally that grainy or?

Thank you so much. You are right we can not say surely what these prehistoric cats' fur was like in color. But based on their living habitats we may guess some options, comparing to modern cats.
The background is manipulated for the best harmony.:-)

Its a common belief in my experience that these ancient cats were tan (as presented here) and or had rosettes or spots, or some combination there of. Too bad it will be a while before we find out in actuality.

Thank you again for this submission.

Agreed.I think it worth waiting till some well preserved genetic specimen to be found. Nothing is impossible though...;-)

And my appreciation for your kind comments.:-)
